They approach tech and innovation challenges with excitement; lead with clarity and conviction, while listening with intention; stand out and stand up, inspiring the next generation.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just a handful of many ideas from Women in Food\u2019s annual networking event, where senior leaders and future stars were invited to connect and share challenges, as well as take part in an inspiring fireside chat.<\/span><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n        <section id=\"\" class=\"align wp-block-acf-single-image-full-width\">\n            <div class=\"block \">\n                            <div class=\"block-inner add-visible\">\n                \n    <div class=\"grid-wrapper-10\">\n    <div class=\"image-wrapper\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newtonimpact.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Women-in-Food-October-2025-40.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n        <section id=\"\" class=\"align wp-block-acf-text\">\n            <div class=\"block \">\n                            <div class=\"block-inner add-visible\">\n                \n<div class=\"block-align left\">\n    \n    <div class=\"wysiwyg\">\n        <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, the discussion centered on the workforce of the future, and featured incredible industry experts:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professor Susan Jebb OBE, Chair of the Food Standards Agency and Professor of Diet and Population Health at the University of Oxford;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dame Fiona Kendrick, board member of Skills England, former CEO of Nestl\u00e9 UK &amp; Ireland and Chair of Women in Food;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Allyson Zimmerman, CEO of the LEAD Network, a non-profit committed to advancing women in consumer goods and retail;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Christina Clark, Consumer Goods Director at Newton and specialist in transforming supply chains from end-to-end.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As host, Christina opened the session with some worrying data. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7306896\/women-leaving-workforce\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Data in the US shows an increase in women between the ages of 25 and 44 living with a child under five leaving the workforce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Post-COVID, more flexible working policies encouraged this age group back into work leading to the highest proportion of labour force participation in recorded history. The recent decline is potentially indicative of remote arrangements being removed in many offices. This led into discussing a set of high level, urgent questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n        <section id=\"\" class=\"align wp-block-acf-quote has-background has-offwhite-background-color\">\n            <div class=\"block \">\n                            <div class=\"block-inner add-visible\">\n                \n<div class=\"grid-wrapper-10\">\n    <blockquote>\n        <p class=\"quote-text\">&#8220;Find the place you want to be within a high-achieving, supportive, interdisciplinary team. You will achieve the most working with brilliant people. It\u2019s exciting and energising when you all learn from each other \u2013 and it is the making of everything I have done.&#8221;<\/p>\n        <cite class=\"font-label\">\n            Professor Susan Jebb OBE                    <\/cite>\n    <\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n        <section id=\"\" class=\"align wp-block-acf-text\">\n            <div class=\"block \">\n                            <div class=\"block-inner add-visible\">\n                \n<div class=\"block-align left\">\n            <!-- General headline styles are set in common.scss -->\n\n<hgroup class=\"headline-wrapper  \" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"Heading group\">\n                <h2 aria-roledescription=\"subtitle\" class=\"main-title large\">What does the next generation of talent need to choose \u2013 and stay \u2013 in a career in food and drink? <\/h2>\n        <\/hgroup>\n    \n    <div class=\"wysiwyg\">\n        <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a cake walk,\u201d admitted Allyson. The LEAD Network\u2019s NextGen Chapter for 25-to-35-year-olds may be its fastest-growing Chapter but only 28% of this age group want to stay in the industry. \u201cWhen I tell leaders that statistic, they can\u2019t believe it!\u201d said Allyson. \u201cAs an industry, we risk losing all this talent. This generation may not wait if they can\u2019t see what they want for their future in today\u2019s leadership and opportunities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, how do we keep them? LEAD research shows that the next generation wants many of the same things as other age groups: visibility, sponsorship and flexibility. The one really significant difference in what women in this group want is a strong sense of purpose. \u201cThat\u2019s something we have spades of in this industry, so as leaders we need to be telling that story,\u201d added Allyson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYounger people coming through have a different lens,\u201d agreed Fiona. \u201cWhile I was at Nestl\u00e9, I was \u2018interviewed\u2019 by a graduate who asked just two questions: one about our sustainability policy and the other about how people demonstrate our purpose: both topics that until that time, people had shied away from.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All this means that we need to tap into people\u2019s personal drivers, believes Susan. \u201cAs soon as I mention what I do to people, they love to ask questions, give their views,\u201d she explained. \u201cTo take that into your job is a real privilege. We all want to feel proud of the work we do. Food isn\u2019t just about individual fuel but societal goals \u2013 for health and the environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n        <section id=\"\" class=\"align wp-block-acf-single-image-full-width\">\n            <div class=\"block \">\n                            <div class=\"block-inner add-visible\">\n                \n    <div class=\"grid-wrapper-10\">\n    <div class=\"image-wrapper\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newtonimpact.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Women-in-Food-October-2025-28.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n        <section id=\"\" class=\"align wp-block-acf-text\">\n            <div class=\"block \">\n                            <div class=\"block-inner add-visible\">\n                \n<div class=\"block-align left\">\n            <!-- General headline styles are set in common.scss -->\n\n<hgroup class=\"headline-wrapper  \" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"Heading group\">\n                <h2 aria-roledescription=\"subtitle\" class=\"main-title large\">Retention takeaways  <\/h2>\n        <\/hgroup>\n    \n    <div class=\"wysiwyg\">\n        <ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tell the story of the purpose of your business in meeting the needs of people and communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide people with the chance to zigzag through different functions to learn across a breadth of disciplines, and also find the area that is right for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Go into depth on your team member\u2019s goals, provide the opportunities they need to grow and show them what\u2019s possible. <\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n        <section id=\"\" class=\"align wp-block-acf-text\">\n            <div class=\"block \">\n                            <div class=\"block-inner add-visible\">\n                \n<div class=\"block-align left\">\n            <!-- General headline styles are set in common.scss -->\n\n<hgroup class=\"headline-wrapper  \" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"Heading group\">\n                <h2 aria-roledescription=\"subtitle\" class=\"main-title large\">What leadership behaviours do you see as most critical for building those innovative, energetic workplaces?  <\/h2>\n        <\/hgroup>\n    \n    <div class=\"wysiwyg\">\n        <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leadership is shifting. People don\u2019t want perfection or a polished performance but authenticity and vulnerability. Allyson explained that it\u2019s not easy: \u201cLeaders need the courage to admit: \u2018I don\u2019t know \u2013 what do you think?\u2019 They need to be curious, listening to others. But they need to be decisive in the same breadth.\u201d Once leaders go in a direction, they need to be consistent while adapting to take other views into consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI truly believe that women leaders have a different skillset that is inspiring and involving and exactly what we need today,\u201d added Fiona. As well as companies with female leaders being more productive and profitable, the panel highlighted two more important female traits: fairness and kindness. \u201cWhat has never been so important,\u201d believes Fiona, \u201cis our transformational style of leadership and our emotional intelligence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n        <section id=\"\" class=\"align wp-block-acf-quote has-background has-offwhite-background-color\">\n            <div class=\"block \">\n                            <div class=\"block-inner add-visible\">\n                \n<div class=\"grid-wrapper-10\">\n    <blockquote>\n        <p class=\"quote-text\">&#8220;Learn from others \u2013 the fantastic and the not so great \u2013 to understand your own leadership. Know what is unique about you: that will be the showstopper.&#8221;<\/p>\n        <cite class=\"font-label\">\n            Allyson Zimmerman                    <\/cite>\n    <\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n        <section id=\"\" class=\"align wp-block-acf-text\">\n            <div class=\"block \">\n                            <div class=\"block-inner add-visible\">\n                \n<div class=\"block-align left\">\n            <!-- General headline styles are set in common.scss -->\n\n<hgroup class=\"headline-wrapper  \" role=\"group\" aria-roledescription=\"Heading group\">\n                <h2 aria-roledescription=\"subtitle\" class=\"main-title large\">How is the evolving health agenda, from obesity to sustainable diets, shaping the kinds of careers we\u2019re seeing in food and drink? <\/h2>\n        <\/hgroup>\n    \n    <div class=\"wysiwyg\">\n        <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The other change affecting attraction and retention according to Fiona, and as seen through her work with Skills England, is that food and drink businesses are looking for different skills today. \u201cThe issue then becomes,\u201d she says, \u201chow do we make sure young people know our factories are as innovative as automotive, our challenges as interesting and life-changing as any industry?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019re answering questions like: how do we sustainably produce food at scale? How do we use regenerative agriculture and vertical farms? What is the future of packaging?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then layer on top the health agenda, for instance: how can we make it easier to eat healthily using technology and self-cultivating meat?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is a phenomenally exciting time in the industry,\u201d said Susan. \u201cThe breadth of skills needed to deliver the future is vast \u2013 from biologists to soil scientists, from engineers and marketers. But with the world moving away from flexibility, and with the jobs required to achieve a sustainable food future often requiring people to be hands-on, on-site and in labs, the industry is at a turning point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will the next gen look to other sectors to build their careers or, knowing they value purpose, can we turn up the volume on what makes our industry unique: our real, undeniable purpose to feed people and keep them healthy and happy?
