Following a roundtable at LGA 2024 exploring the theme of ‘lessons from improvement and intervention and strategies for financial sustainability’, this roundtable will start by considering what has changed since 2024, and what has not, including the continued impact of significant and increasing financial and demand pressures; LGR, devolution and wider public sector reforms; and the results of the elections (local and national). The session will also consider government’s changing approach to intervention and assurance, and what can be learnt from those currently experiencing this. The roundtable will invite Chief Executives to explore and share strategies that are being taken to transform services and achieve financial sustainability, with or without government oversight.

Children’s social care services are embarking on a period of significant change. In the face of increasing demand and cost pressures in children’s social care, the Government has announced plans to implement “the biggest reform of children’s social care in a generation”. This roundtable will explore how local areas can deliver the reforms successfully, and make best use of the wider public sector resources available (including the prevention grant), to maximise the impact in each local area, to keep children safe, and to help families thrive. It will also consider the role of local leaders and partners in overcoming barriers and delivering sustainable, family-focused care.

In the context of significant changes and reform across local government and the public sector more broadly, this session will explore the future of local government and public service delivery, the impact and opportunities of the reforms currently underway or planned, and the leadership role of chief executives within this. This round table discussion will provide an opportunity for Chief Executives to explore their role as leaders of innovation and entrepreneurship in their place.
