Summer Academy and Pioneering Potential Programmes

Hands-on internships for hands-on people

Learn what it means to make a difference by gaining core consulting skills, then applying them first-hand to a live project.

What you’ll do

Get into real world projects

We run two internship programmes –  Pioneering Potential in July and Summer Academy in August each year. The Summer Academy is open to all students working towards a degree, and the Pioneering Potential encourages talented people from lower socio-economic backgrounds to pursue a career that might not have been accessible before.

With no previous experience needed, you’ll receive two weeks’ training on processes and methodology, while learning about personal brand, communication and presentation skills. The final two weeks will be spent working on a live project with our people.

Those who shine are offered positions at Newton. So if you’re successful, you’re guaranteed a Graduate Consultant role on finishing university.

Equal opportunities

Pioneering Potential Programme

Consulting is an incredible career. But we realise that people don’t always have access to the same opportunities for advancement. Our Pioneering Potential programme is built to address this disparity and encourage candidates from lower socio-economic backgrounds to discover avenues into consulting. We have also used the UK Government’s recommended list of parental occupations to help us define lower socio-economic backgrounds in our workforce.

Application process

We keep it simple

Our application is as efficient as the way we work – no cover letter, and completion in as little as a month.

1

Application Form

Start by completing a short form covering your education, work experience, and achievements. We welcome applicants from all academic backgrounds, though we do have a minimum UCAS benchmark of AAB at A-Level or equivalent. In some cases – such as where socio-economic background or extenuating circumstances may have impacted academic performance – additional context can be considered through our contextual recruitment approach, so it may still be worth applying even if you’re a few grades short.

2

Online Assessments

This stage includes a series of assessments designed to evaluate your cognitive ability and suitability for Newton. You’ll begin with a Realistic Job Preview Quiz, which isn’t assessed, and helps you decide if Newton is the right fit for you. Next, you’ll complete a cognitive assessment covering logical reasoning, numerical skills, and data interpretation, followed by a behavioural assessment.

3

Video Interview

This short one-way video interview is your chance to let your personality shine. You’ll answer three questions about your experiences, so be yourself and show us your communication skills. We have real assessors – not AI – screening these so treat it like an in-person interview.

4

Selection Day

Our virtual assessment centre is a chance to really get to know each other. You’ll take part in a group exercise, technical tasks, and a mini-interview – all based on real Newton case studies to give you insight into our work. You’ll also meet some of our consultants and have the opportunity to ask questions in a Q&A. We recommend brushing up on your numerical skills and preparing for the interview.

5

Offer

Got the internship role? Great, we look forward to welcoming you to the team for the summer. If you’re successful, you’ll be offered a Graduate Consultant role with us once you graduate from university.

Skills

What we look for

Our internships offer a taste of consulting – no experience needed. What we look for are analytical and conceptual capabilities: sharp critical thinkers with strong communication skills. Outstanding interpersonal skills are needed, those who can balance EQ & IQ, and bring their whole self to the team.

Work is fast-paced, with new challenges every day. So we need self-starters, ready to take on responsibility and dive in and those who bring their whole selves to the team.
